Supporting various cell types—including mammalian suspension, adherent, and microbial cells—Sphere Bio’s picodroplet technology enables transfection, transduction, and comprehensive proteome, genome, and transcriptome assays.
At the heart of Sphere Bio’s platforms are picodroplets—tiny droplets of aqueous fluid in an oil carrier (‘single aqueous’) or an aqueous core surrounded by an oil shell in an aqueous carrier (‘double aqueous’). Each picodroplet encapsulates a cell, with carefully designed emulsion chemistry ensuring long-term stability, biocompatibility, and minimal molecular leakage, even for small metabolites. This creates an ultra-miniaturized test tube containing media, reagents, and cells, enabling large-scale single-cell experiments with precision and efficiency.
Picodroplets are powered by Sphere Bio’s software, which enables seamless automation of processes in their instruments. With an intuitive graphical interface, users can easily select and control multiple process parameters. The software ensures rapid and accurate characterization and selection of cells in picodroplets, whether through fluorescent markers or imaging, often leveraging AI techniques.
